Holloway Road gambling shop plan sparks resident objections

Local newspaper The Islington Tribune reported that Cain’s Amusements Ltd proposed 24/7 “Adult Gaming Centre” named the Lucky Jackpot had bypassed formal planning proposals by going straight to licensing.

The proposed location of the Lucky Jackpot, Holloway Road, is already home to six other gambling premises on a one-mile stretch. It would fill the vacant building that used to be a Barclays’ bank and consist largely of slot games .

Residents submitted 250 objections about the premises to the council during a public consultation, which closed in July. The issue is set to be discussed at a licensing meeting in September.

A spokesperson for Islington Council said: “Public participation is an important part of the licensing process, and we are committed to ensuring residents have the opportunity to make their views known.

“Under the Gambling Act 2005, the applicant was required to publish a notice in a local newspaper circulating in the area and display a public notice at the premises for at least 28 consecutive days. In addition, Islington Council carried out a resident letter drop.

“This was undertaken within the immediate area and is applied consistently to applications in addition to the statutory requirements.

“The council has received representations in relation to the application from local residents and responsible authorities, and it will be considered by a licensing sub-committee in September.”
