Arsenal are looking to continue their perfect start to their Premier League title defence with a Saturday evening trip to Wearside. The Gunners have won their opening three games so far, beating Chelsea 2-1 last time out in a thriller at the Emirates Stadium. Martin Odegaard struck the winner in north London after Morgan Rogers had opened the scoring against the side that had made him a summer transfer priority, and Kai Havertz levelled the scores for the hosts against his old employers.

Mikel Arteta’s men are looking for a better result than they got here last term, having been held to an exciting 2-2 draw by the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light last November. Brian Brobbey netted a dramatic late equaliser in second-half stoppage time, after Leandro Trossard had struck what he thought would be the winner on Wearside.

Regis Le Bris’ hosts, meanwhile, have had a mixed start to the new season, winning one, drawing another and losing the other. They beat Fulham 1-0 having lost at Ipswich, before drawing with Brentford. Keep up to date with all the latest with our live blog below.

42 mins: Sunderland claim a penalty as Angulo runs into Konsa and White dangles a leg. Nothing doing. The ball ricochets for Meunier who has a tame crack, but it deflects wide. Corner.

41 mins: The hosts have really grown in belief having not conceded, fuelled by the fervent home support.

38 mins: Arteta has been shown a caution for encroaching out of his technical area. The Sunderland fans jeer. At least one referee has taken action against the Arsenal manager...

36 mins: VAR are looking at a potential penalty with the corner delivered and Calafiori down under a challenge from Brobbey, but nothing doing.

34 mins: Good save! Havertz takes a floated ball down and juggles it, looking for the improvised acrobatic, and Roefs denies him! Corner, Arsenal.

33 mins: The home fans applaud as Sunderland continue to grow into this contest. They haven’t shown much threat going forward, but that will be down to their five defenders on the pitch...

30 mins: Arsenal tidy enough in possession but Sunderland have been pretty comfortable so far. Scrappy game is suiting them just fine. Has the feel of the trip to Villa Park for the Gunners, when they had to be patient and battle to eventually take control.

29 mins: Free kick, Arsenal. Saka makes a dart down the right and Angulo and Reinildo double up on him. The left-back wrestles him to the ground, and gets a yellow.

26 mins: The home fans are looking to gee their side up as Arsenal slow the game down with restarts. We’ve just seen the referee forced into a countdown with White taking too long on a throw.

23 mins: Close! Gabriel takes matters into his own hands and goes for a long-range effort, but he drags it wide of the mark.
