Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in a matter of seconds as Albion raced into a 4-0 lead by the 31st minute, before João Gomes was sent off before half-time for violent conduct to make it a disastrous start to the season for Aston Villa.
Unai Emery, who has had Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa and Youri Tielemans sold this summer, saw his team go a goal down in the eighth minute when Victor Lindelöf was powerless to prevent an own goal after Maxim De Cuyper’s shot from a tight angle bounced on to him after hitting the woodwork.
