Europe’s biggest street party is almost underway AFP/Getty Niva Yadav 5 minutes ago Revellers are to descend on W10 today as Notting Hill Carnival takes over west London for one of the world’s biggest street parties.
The annual celebration of Caribbean culture will see mas bands, steel pan bands, dancers, and sound systems light up the west London district in colour, glitter, and feathers.
This year’s festivities mark 60 years since the carnival ’s inception, which was originally born out of resistance to racial injustice .
Following Saturday’s Steel Band Competition, today will see the colourful J’ouvert opening celebration at Ladbroke Grove followed by the much-anticipated Children’s Day and Dutty Mas parade, kicking off at Westbourne Park .
Sounds of calypso, samba reggae and soca are expected through the day until 7pm. Festivities will tomorrow continue when the Adult’s Day parade will mark the height of carnival.
