Why small businesses can’t afford to treat cybersecurity as an afterthought

For a growing small business, cybersecurity can often feel like one of those problems that belongs to larger companies with dedicated security teams.

But cybercriminals have no interest in company headcount - they are hunting for valuable data, accessible accounts and opportunities to turn a single mistake into a financial payoff, which makes cybersecurity a business priority, not simply an IT concern.

The risks will hopefully sound familiar: phishing emails, fake invoices, stolen passwords, ransomware, payment fraud and attempts to hijack business accounts, as attackers look to exploit employees and everyday business processes rather than needing to defeat sophisticated technical defences.

AI is giving cybercrime a serious productivity boost But now there is an additional force making these threats harder to ignore: artificial intelligence.

Generative AI has obvious benefits for legitimate businesses, but the same capabilities can be turned against them, as criminals can use AI to produce convincing messages at scale, personalise phishing attempts and automate parts of an attack that previously required significant manual effort.

Europol has warned that generative AI is already being used to supercharge social engineering, enabling criminals to tailor scam messages to victims' personal and cultural context, helping criminal networks scale their operations while reducing the risk of being detected.

Microsoft has likewise documented AI-assisted phishing campaigns involving automated infrastructure and highly personalised lures, with one recent campaign seeing attackers use generative AI to create phishing emails tailored to victims' roles, including invoice and business-workflow themes.

For a small company, the significance is straightforward: an attack doesn't have to be highly sophisticated to be dangerous, especially at a small business where everyone is constantly spinning multiple plates.

If AI allows criminals to send more convincing attacks to more potential victims, the probability that one eventually reaches an employee at exactly the wrong moment increases - meaning that waiting until something goes wrong is no longer a particularly rational strategy.

Security needs to cover the way small businesses actually work The challenge for entrepreneurs is that “taking cybersecurity seriously” can sound like a prescription for another full-time job.

Most small companies don't have a security operations centre, a dedicated IT department or the resources to spend hours configuring enterprise security products - but this is where Bitdefender Ultimate Small Business Security can help.

Rather than concentrating on a single layer of protection, the platform is designed around the collection of risks that small businesses encounter in everyday operations.
