M1 traffic - live: Miles of queues from Junctions 23 and 24 after lorry overturns

Drivers face chaos on a major motorway which is closed in both directions after a lorry overturned and is lying over the central reservation barrier.

The M1 has been shut in Leicestershire between junction 24, for Kegworth, and junction 23A for East Midlands Airport.

Emergency services are at the scene of the crash, National Highway said: " The M1 is closed in both directions between J24 (Kegworth) and J23A (A42 junction) due to an overturned lorry that has come to rest on the central reservation barrier.

"Emergency services are on scene. There are approximately 30 min delays and 2 miles of congestion on the approach."

An update from National Highways says that there are now delays of an hour heading southbound on the M1 and 40 minutes in the other direction.

It states: "Update 3: M1 both directions J24 (Kegworth) and J23 (Loughborough) remains closed due to an overturned vehicle. Recovery work is ongoing. Delays: 60 mins on M1 south, 40 mins on M1 north and 70 mins on the A42 north on approach to the M1."
