'Joining Liverpool from Fulham was the biggest failure of my career - my mum got me in trouble'

Paul Konchesky says joining Liverpool from Fulham was a dream come true - until it quickly turned into a nightmare. The left-back had a tough time at Anfield, with his mother also getting him in trouble with fans.

Konchesky's two former clubs face off on Saturday afternoon as the Cottagers travel to Anfield to face Andoni Iraola's Reds. The 45-year-old joined Liverpool on deadline day in 2010, signing a £3.5million deal with Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic heading the other way to west London.

However, the defender did not arrive to much fanfare at Anfield as he followed unpopular new manager Roy Hodgson in moving from Fulham to Liverpool.

Konchesky made just 18 appearances at Liverpool and was loaned out to Nottingham Forest mid-way through his only season. The defender struggled and admitted that the "dream" move was the biggest failure of his career.

When asked if he believed he was good enough to play for Liverpool, Konchesky told the ECHO in 2025: "Yeah, I do, yeah. I obviously wouldn’t have gone if I didn't back myself to play for a football club like that because you don't want to embarrass yourself.

"But it didn't work out. I think you just have to bite the bullet on that one. And I have to say that it is probably one of the biggest failures in my 20-year career."

Things got particularly bad for Konchesky when his mum went viral for branding the Reds' supporters "Scouse scum" on social media in response to the backlash her son had received after a defeat by Stoke City.

She wrote at the time: "To all you Liverpool Scouse scum out the (sic) never mind the cockney ct. Take a real look at you team stop living off the past. the team are st. Anyone made a mistake, it's the cockney c**t. Never should have left Fulham."

The post was taken down not long after it was published, and a club spokesperson told the ECHO at the time: "Mrs Konchensky's comments are inappropriate and have already been removed from Facebook. This does remain, however, a private family matter."

Despite all the chaos caused at Anfield, Konchesky still believes he would've made the same decision and signed for them. "Listen, I don't regret many things in my career. You look at it now, do I regret it? Only because of what happened. But I was 29 and going to one of the biggest clubs with a massive history. You can't turn that down," he said.

"I knew the club was trying to change hands with the owners, but obviously not as much as it probably was behind the scenes. So I knew it was going to be difficult, it was a difficult time for the club. But if someone comes to you at 29 years old and it’s a club like Liverpool with that massive history, I think everyone will bite their hands off. And it was a dream come true.

"I learned loads from it, I played with some fantastic players and I met some fantastic people along the way."

Following his time at Liverpool, Konchesky had stints at Leicester City, Gillingham and Queens Park Rangers before retiring in 2018. He was most recently the manager of Women's Super League side West Ham United.
