Boy, 16, appears in court charged with murder of man

A teenage boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Dungannon, County Tyrone, and the attempted murder of two other people in the same incident.

The body of the dead man, who was 61, was found alongside his injured eight-year-old daughter at a house on Lisnahull Road on Saturday morning.

The man's 48-year-old wife sustained non-life threatening injuries during the attack.

The 16-year-old defendant, who cannot be named because of his age, was also charged with making threats to kill. He appeared in court in Omagh on Tuesday morning and was remanded in custody.

The teenager spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

BBC News NI understands the man who died was from Guinea-Bissau, but had lived in Northern Ireland for more than two decades.

During the hearing, defence solicitor Jarlath Faloon said there were "clear concerns" about the defendant's mental health.

Faloon said the defendant had been examined by a mental health nurse over the weekend but not at psychiatric level.

The judge made an order to conduct a mental health assessment of the defendant.
