‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ preorders are skewing overwhelmingly to the ‘ultimate edition’

Nearly 90% of preorders for Grand Theft Auto 6 are for the more expensive Ultimate edition , according to a new report.

Market research company Sensor Tower told GamesIndustry.biz that a massive 89% of preorders are for the $100 (£73.75) Ultimate edition as opposed to the $80 (£59) Standard edition.

Sensor Tower also confirmed that the Ultimate edition is proving equally popular on Xbox Series X|S, where 90% of preorders are for the more expensive version, and PlayStation 5, where 88.5% of preorders are for the premium edition.

Sensor Tower’s SVP and GM of Video Game Insights , Karl Kontus, told the outlet that while premium editions “always tend to perform well during the preorder period”, this figure is still pretty unprecedented.

“That being said, I have never seen a 90% premium share before,” he said.

“A 50% premium share during preorders is a great number.

Typical premium shares for games tend to be at around 10–20%.” ‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ cover art.

Earlier this year, Rockstar Games confirmed it would be making several in-game features exclusive to the more expensive Ultimate version of Grand Theft Auto 6 .

“The difference between $80 – already higher than the industry standard $70 we see today – and $100 isn’t that big, and the $100 [edition] comes with a lot of additional content,” Kontus told GamesIndustry.biz .

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set for release on November 19.

In the meantime, an Extended Look at the game will premiere on Netflix on August 27 at 8pm before being released more widely at 2am the following morning.

The decision to lock this first-look content behind a streaming paywall has already angered some GTA fans , however.

“6 hours later? Guess I’ll be watching some shit-ass quality re-upload on Discord,” one fan wrote on Reddit.
