Ask Primark staff one question for 'free' item left behind tills

Many Primark stores will have an item behind the till that staff may be able to give away 'for free' if shoppers ask. The fashion chain usually has no problem with customers asking to keep their hangers when buying clothes at checkout - but few realise they could ask for extras, too.

Purchasing clothes hangers can be surprisingly expensive, depending on where you shop. Some stores will ask shoppers if they want to keep the hanger their new item was displayed on, but others don't, and shops reuse it for another item.

This often results in a pile of unused hangers that could be given a new home if shoppers ask one question at the tills. The tip was previously reported after someone asked at their local Primark, as mentioned before by the Mirror .

Writing on the popular Facebook group, Extreme Couponing and Bargaining, the shopper said: "Just a tip for anyone desperately in need of coat hangers. Go to Primark and ask for some!

"I went today and they asked if my mum wanted to keep the hangers and I said I will as I'm in need of some. [The staff] gave me a bag full and told me if I need any more to go in and ask, as they get charged to dispose of them!"

Loads of people were thrilled to discover this, and one group member said: "Better than going into landfill!" Another wrote: "I'm so glad I've just seen this. I literally just been on Amazon looking at coat hangers!"

A third put: "This is a great idea. I don't understand this need for perfectly aesthetic clothes hangers that match - they're just there to do a job and hardly anyone is going to see them anyway!"

Someone else said: "If there's nothing wrong with them then this is a great thing from Primark. Customer gets hangers for free and they don't have to deal with the waste."

One person who claimed to work at the budget clothing retailer backed the claim, adding "I work there! Just ask, we will definitely give them to you."

Another who also claims to be a shop worker urged customers to "just ask" if they want a particular type of hanger. They said: "Don't forget that they also have trousers hangers and the 'one peg' ones from the men shorts. [Nine times out of ten] they are buried but it's worth the ask." Some put in the comments that this tip isn't unique to Primark, with another shop worker claiming at the time: "We will give hangers in Poundland too!"

While most Primark employees are glad to help and hand over leftover hangers, it depends on what the specific store has in stock and whether they have extras available at that moment.
