Imagine there's no Shiny Hunters – AI could make human hacking crews obsolete

KETTLE The FBI has announced what appears to be a third arrest in the ShinyHunters investigation, following the group's breach of Bureau systems, even as AI advances potentially leave human hackers on borrowed time.

A second vulnerability discovered by Anthropic's Mythos model has been exploited in the wild, and it's not one that humans probably would have discovered, begging the question just how important we are in the future of cybercrime.

Join host Brandon Vigliarolo, cybersecurity editor Jessica Lyons, and senior reporter Tom Claburn to discuss those stories, and what they mean for the future of cybersecurity, on this week's episode.

A lightly edited transcript is below: Brandon (00:01) Hey everyone, and welcome to the latest episode of The Register's Kettle Podcast.

I'm your host, Reg reporter Brandon Vigliarolo, and this week we've got a couple cybersecurity stories to chat about, but that doesn't mean we're leaving AI out of the conversation, of course.

With me to chat about some arrests and new revelations about the capabilities of Anthropic's Mythos model are Reg cybersecurity editor Jess Lyons and senior reporter Tom Claburn.

Tom (00:27) Yeah, thank you.

Jessica (00:28) Good to be here.

So as I understand, one guy was arrested at the end of last month and now they bagged another one this week.

Is that right? Jessica (00:44) Well, this looks like it brings the count up to three, actually.
