'I left Newcastle for Tottenham and it was the worst decision – I didn't know how bad it would be'

Sandro Tonali will be hoping his decision to swap Newcastle for Tottenham goes better than Les Ferdinand's in 1997 after he called it the worst move of his career. Spurs play host to the Magpies on Saturday as Tonali is reunited with his former team.

The Italian joined the north Londoners from Newcastle this summer in a deal worth up to £100million. Tonali was eager to join Spurs after meeting with Roberto De Zerbi, claiming that after a chat with his fellow Italian it took him "10 minutes" to agree to the move.

However, not all moves from the north east to London have worked out. Just as Ferdinand, who majorly regretted his switch almost 30 years ago. The former striker believes he should've never left Newcastle, despite Spurs being his boyhood club.

Speaking on the Sky Sports News Transfer Talk podcast in 2019, Ferdinand said: "I didn’t want to leave Newcastle United . I was there for two years and I would have spent the rest of my career there. I thought it was a great club and thought we were on the cusp of winning something.
