London Fire Brigade said around 70 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze PA Archive Megan Howe , News Reporter 1 minute ago COMMENTS A woman and child escaped a burning flat on the 17th floor of an east London tower block early this morning.

The pair left the flat alongside fifty other residents before firefighters arrived at the scene at around 4.35am.

Around 70 firefighters were called to the tower block, across the Thames from the O2 , on Saturday.

Half of a property on the 17th floor of the 22-storey block of residential flats in Blackwall Way was damaged, London Fire Brigade said.

London Fire Brigade said: “The Brigade’s 999 control officers were called at 0435 and mobilised crews from Poplar, Whitechapel , Plaistow, Stratford, Shadwell, East Ham, East Greenwich , Bethnal Green and Greenwich fire stations.
