9/11 anniversary latest: Victims remembered 25 years on from September 11 attacks

Donald Trump is set to make a speech at the Pentagon in Virginia to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. Earlier this morning a memorial service was held at Ground zero in Manhattan to mark the anniversary.

The US president is reported to have skipped the memorial in New York as he was unable to make a speech.

Today marks 25 years since the morning of September 11 2001 when al Qaida terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger planes in the United States. At 8.46am American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, less than 20 minutes later at 9.03am, Flight 175 tore through the South Tower Two, causing both towers to collapse.

A third plane was crashed into the Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, DC. The fourth plane, Flight 93, crashed in rural Pennsylvania after the crew and passengers overpowered the terrorists on board, preventing it from hitting another target, thought to be the Capitol building.

The attacks killed 2,977 people from 90 nations – 2,753 people were killed in New York, 184 people were killed at the Pentagon and 40 people were killed on Flight 93. Many more have died from, or are suffering with, health conditions linked to the toxic dust which spilled into the streets of Lower Manhattan .

Donald Trump has finished his speech at the Pentagon by praising the "power of the American spirit" 25 years on from the 9/11 attacks.

"Today, our country is stronger than it has ever been before. It has never been as strong as it is right now," Trump says.

He said future generations "stand in a nation that is free and unyielding in the face of evil, and they will still honour the heroes of 9/11".

A sixth bell has rang out at the National Memorial in New York followed by another moment of silence. It marks the exact moment - at 10:28am - the World Trade Center's North Tower fell.

A fourth and fifth bell were sounded earlier. The fourth came at 9:59am to mark the exact moment the South Tower collapsed.

The fifth bell, which came at 10:03am, represents the moment Flight 93 crashed into an empty field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers tried to take control of the plane back from hijackers.

Donald Trump has said Iran will never have a nuclear weapon during his speech on the 9/11 attacks. The US president told the audience at the Pentagon:

He adds that events like 9/11 show what a country is truly made of. "We're learning right now what we're made of, and we have to be strong and we have to be smart," he says.

President Donald Trump is now speaking at the 9/11 ceremony at the Pentagon in Washington. He says:
