Watch: Around 100 firefighters tackle huge blaze at waste facility in Deptford

Scores of firefighters tackled a huge fire at a waste facility in southeast London.

Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze on Landman Way in Deptford involving 50 tonnes of household waste on Tuesday night.

The facility was “severely damaged” by the fire, the London Fire Brigade said.

Rail services into London Bridge were impacted as crews work to bring the fire, that sent smoke spiralling across the London skyline, under control.

Firefighters tackle the blaze at the Deptford waste centre LFB The force was first called just before 8pm, and crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford and surrounding fire stations went to the scene.

LFB confirmed the fire was brought under control just after 2am on Wednesday, with crews remaining on scene to extinguish pockets of fire.

Footage online showed large plumes of smoke billowing into the sky, with the blaze seen for miles across London.

Locals gathered around the facility to film the huge blaze on their mobile phones, as flames ripped through the building.

Local residents were urged to keep their windows and doors closed where possible as firefighters tackled the blaze.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Firefighters tackled a blaze at the same facility in June .

Speaking from the scene, Station Commander Duncan Rees said: “Crews worked hard in difficult conditions to bring the fire under control.

“One of the Brigade’s 32m ladders and a 64m ladder were both used as water towers to tackle the flames from above.

National Rail said some lines between New Cross and London Bridge were blocked and there were delays of up to 30 minutes.
