Andy Burnham meets Trump live: UN leader issues warning to world as PM faces biggest test
Andy Burnham is in New York City for his first face-to-face meeting with Donald Trump in a high-stakes head-to-head - as the US President said America was "settling unfinished business".
The PM will sit down with the embattled President, who in recent weeks has made awkward interventions over the future of the Falklands and the unification of Ireland . And his disastrous war in Iran is driving up prices across the world as Mr Burnham wrestles with a cost-of-living crisis.
Yet in the face of global economic chaos and ongoing military action, Trump told the annual meeting of world leaders takes place at the United Nations General Assembly "where others have spoken of peace, I've made peace" while conversely stating: "We are settling years of unfinished business and we are doing it well" as he then went on to boast of attacks on Iran.
The Prime Minister will come face-to face with the President later in what's been described as his biggest test since moving into Downing Street. Ahead of his departure for New York, Mr Burnham said: "I will be making the case for closer international co-operation on AI, a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, and renewed efforts to bring an end to the conflict in the Middle East because what happens abroad impacts each and every one of us at home."
After outlining his version of the war with Iran, Mr Trump threatened to “annihilate” the country and “drive them into Hell” if its regime refused to capitulate and reach a deal.
“Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before?” Trump said, framing what he described as the choice before him. “Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic?”
