'Stupid mistakes' - Root 'hacked off' by latest off-field incident

A furious Joe Root vowed England would earn back the trust of the nation after his return as Test captain was overshadowed by the latest off-field incident to rock English cricket.

England swept Pakistan away by an innings and 103 runs inside three days at Headingley to hand Root victory on his comeback as Test captain.

Within 24 hours, video footage emerged of England fast bowler Brydon Carse being handcuffed and led away by police on Saturday night after Durham's players had gone out to celebrate their win at Derbyshire in the County Championship.

Carse, who was seen talking to team-mate Matthew Potts, with former England captain Ben Stokes also pictured in the background, has subsequently been withdrawn from the squad for the second Pakistan Test at Lord's with an investigation by the Cricket Regulator underway.

"If I'm being brutally honest, I'm really hacked off," Root told a press conference. "I'm really disappointed that after last week's performance we are sat here and we're talking about something not related to it at all.

"In terms of the incident itself, obviously with the regulator, there's not a lot I can say on it. It's in their hands now.

"I've spoken to Brydon when I first found out; my first concern was for him as a person. In my time in the dressing room, you obviously develop personal relationships with players.

"I don't think I'm speaking out of turn when I say he's been very upset and has been very apologetic and understands his actions. I'm sure when he gets his chance, he will say that himself.

"It's not the isolated incident itself, it's the fact that we continually keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it's detracting from what we're doing on the field."

The Carse incident is not the first off-field episode England have had to navigate.

White-ball captain Harry Brook was punched by a bouncer while out the evening before a one-day international in New Zealand last autumn.

An unverified video appeared to show opener Ben Duckett drunk while the team were on a mid-series break in the beach resort of Noosa during their ill-fated Ashes tour.

Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson missed the second Test of the 2-1 home defeat to New Zealand earlier this summer after breaking the curfew to attend a Chelsea nightclub as they celebrated victory in the first game of the series at Lord's.
