Spurs beaten again as Elanga and Wissa strike for Newcastle

Tottenham have lost their first two Premier League matches and failed to score in both as rejuvenated duo Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa struck to earn Newcastle a 2-0 victory.

Spurs' big-spending summer, in which they have splashed £320m on eight new players, is yet to have an impact on Roberto De Zerbi's side, who were booed off a week on from being thrashed 3-0 at Brentford and lacked a cutting edge in their first home league game despite handing a debut to forward Omar Marmoush.

De Zerbi's other key signing, £75m winger Savio, has already been dealt an injury blow, missing out with muscle fatigue, while midfielder Sandro Tonali, who left Newcastle in a £100m move, was mocked by his former supporters as they collected their first win.

Tottenham were the better side in the first half, with Newcastle goalkeeper Lucas Hornicek making saves from Mathys Tel and Jan Paul van Hecke, but Elanga, who struggled last season but shone last weekend with a goal against Liverpool, swivelled in the area and sent a shot off the post midway through the second half to put Newcastle ahead.

De Zerbi reacted with three substitutes, yet Spurs never looked likely to find an equaliser, and Wissa, another who disappointed under previous boss Eddie Howe, compounded their misery. Newcastle sub Nick Woltemade headed a corner into the six-yard box and Wissa, with his back to goal, hooked the ball over his head into the net.
