Chelsea: Xabi Alonso reveals Enzo Fernandez wish as Man City ponder huge bid

Xabi Alonso said he hopes Enzo Fernandez ’s transfer future will be clarified soon as Manchester City weigh up a new bid for the Argentine.

Fernandez’s future has been up in the air throughout the summer. He had been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid earlier in the window, but after they distanced themselves from reports, he emerged as a target for Enzo Maresca’s Man City .

Chelsea set a deadline for clubs to meet their £120m asking price for Fernandez two weeks ago, which City allowed to pass, but new reports suggest they are prepared to come back in with an offer regardless .

Fernandez has since returned to Chelsea training and appears to be in Alonso’s plans for the new season. He was named to the bench for the Blues’ Premier League opener on Monday night, coming on in the 65th minute to help his side to a 3-2 victory.

Asked for an update on the player’s situation at full-time, Alonso could not say whether Fernandez would stay or go but did make clear he looked forward to having clarity on the situation.

“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”

Chelsea are expected to focus on outgoings for the remainder of the window, with Liam Delap in talks over a move to Nottingham Forest and Mamadou Sarr nearing a move to Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu expected to follow him through the exit door, either on loan or permanently. Dario Essugo has also been made available for loan moves.
