Brit family including girl, 13, and beauty queen mum missing in Nepal floods

Nearly 2,000 people are still missing following horror flooding in Nepal and Tibet - with the death toll now rising above 570.

A family from the UK including a girl, 13, and former Mrs India UK are those unaccounted for. They are businessman Santosh Sahu, 46, his wife and former Mrs India UK winner Surabhi Manmath Padhy, 44, their son Spandan Sahu, 18, and daughter Syna Kumari Sahu, 13.

Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts have been halted over fears a dam, which has already overflowed, will burst. Chinese authorities say there is a "high risk" that the barrier lake, formed by a landslide caused by the floods on Wednesday, could break apart and spark another devastating deluge.

Rescue teams continued to work on Friday through mud and debris in areas devastated by a flash flood on the Himalayan border between Nepal and China.

Hundreds of people remain missing as the death toll climbed above 570 and Nepali and Chinese authorities warned of further risk of flooding from a new lake that has formed upstream following Wednesday's disaster. Those still in the potentially affected areas at risk were warned to move to safer ground.

More than 3,700 people have been rescued in Nepal so far, but 1,924 people remain unaccounted for in the country. China's state media previously said 558 people were missing on the Chinese side.

Nepalese police have said that the number of foreign nationals missing in Nepal has gone up.

The figure now stands at 575, up from around 537 which was the total given around six hours ago.

There are currently people from 36 countries missing in the wake of the flash floods, including 33 British nationals, 183 Indian nationals, 65 US nationals, and 62 Ukrainian nationals.

The school where missing Brit Spandan Sahu, from Surrey, had just finished his A-levels has said it is “greatly concerned” over reports that he and his family are missing in Nepal.

We previously reported that the family of four, including Spandan and his 13-year-old sister Syna, are among 33 Britons believed to be missing in the region.

A spokesperson for Royal Grammar School, Guildford, the private school where Spandan was a senior prefect and member of the hockey and cricket teams, said: "It is with great concern that we have been informed that a former student, along with members of his family, have been reported missing in Nepal."

"Whilst we are hoping for positive news, we do not have any further information at this time.

"Our thoughts, love and deepest sympathies are with all of the families and loved ones of anyone affected by this tragedy in Nepal at this incredibly difficult time."
