I've lived in New England my whole life. I skip Newport for this other coastal city with great food, shopping, and history.

I love visiting Portsmouth, a charming coastal city in New Hampshire.

Rebecca Strong As a New England native, I love vacationing in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

In my opinion, the city offers the same charm as places like Newport but with a more laid-back vibe.

Portsmouth has lots of great accommodations, restaurants, and historic sites to visit.

Many travelers flock to New England destinations like Boston, Bar Harbor, and Newport for a weekend getaway.

But as a Massachusetts resident who's spent my entire life living in and exploring New England, I've found myself returning to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, instead.

To me, it offers the same coastal charm as its more popular neighbors but with a more laid-back atmosphere.

Plus, I think it's one of the most underrated New England getaways because it has a little something for everyone — from independent boutiques, craft breweries, and live music to riverfront parks and nearby beaches.

There are lots of great accommodations in town.

Rebecca Strong I've visited Portsmouth nearly a dozen times now, staying at both larger chains and boutique properties.

I've never once had a negative experience — even during the peak season when amenities are crowded and staff are stretched thin.

In my experience, the rates tend to be more affordable than they are in many other coastal New England destinations, too.

Of all the accommodations I've experienced, the AC Hotel Downtown/Waterfront is where I keep returning again and again — and not only because of the sleek, modern accommodations.

It's also conveniently located within walking distance of many of the shops and restaurants, and the rooftop restaurant and bar offers sweeping views of the Piscataqua River — not to mention a killer espresso martini and an epic weekend brunch.
