After Lakers Sale, Mark Walter Also Offloads Stake In Chelsea F.C.

After Lakers Sale, Mark Walter Also Offloads Stake In Chelsea F.C.

Dodgers owner Mark Walter has now exited from his second pro sports team in just over a month.

The mogul, whose TWG Global portfolio of companies is facing inquiries from the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission, has offloaded his stake in Premier League Club Chelsea F.C. as part of a larger deal.

Walter had been part of the Todd Boehly-led consortium in 2022 that had acquired the football club from Russian businessman Roman Abramovich after he was sanctioned by the U.K. government as part of actions taken over the war in Ukraine.

The Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano-led Clearlake Capital Group, which had partnered with Boehly and Walter on the Chelsea buy, has now bought out both of their stakes, the team said on Thursday. “I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership,” Boehly stated.

Boehly also holds numerous stakes in entertainment industry companies through his own holding firm. The former Guggenheim Partners executive, who founded his own firm, Eldridge Industries, in 2015, has held stakes in Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions, House of Cards producer MRC, A24, Fulwell Entertainment, Sugar23 and Film Expo Group, among many others. (Boehly also held direct control of The Hollywood Reporter in the 2010s prior to the magazine’s sale to Jay Penske’s PMC in 2020.) A joint venture, Penske Media Eldridge, operates the Golden Globes and Eldridge has a stake in the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the Globes venue.

This is the latest turn for Walter after selling his ownership stake in the Lakers at a valuation of $12.5 billion in August to Thrive Capital’s Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger. The move surprised many given Walter had owned the team for one season, the NBA’s board of governors approved his deal to buy the Los Angeles team in October 2025.

Given his abrupt deal to sell the Lakers amid what had been reported to be government scrutiny stemming from deals made by his asset-management giant Guggenheim Investments over the years, observers had speculated whether he would sell more of his ownership stakes in pro teams.

Walter’s group has stakes in WNBA’s L.A. Sparks, the Cadillac Formula 1 team, the Professional Women’s Hockey League, tennis’ Billie Jean King Cup as well as multiple motosports investments. In late August, TWG Global issued a series of bullet points saying that the Dodgers were not for sale, and neither is the Cadillac Formula 1 team or TWG Motorsports.

At the time, Walter’s firm also said it was complying with DoJ and SEC inquiries over his insurance firms practices and stated, “Despite what has been reported, there has been no fraud.”
