Disney’s Lavish K-Drama ‘The Remarried Empress’ Sets Busan Premiere Ahead of Streaming Launch

Disney + has set a Nov. 4 premiere date for The Remarried Empress , its lavish Korean fantasy-romance series starring Shin Min-a, Ju Ji-hoon, Lee Jong-suk and Lee Se-young.

The 10-part series will launch with four episodes, followed by two new installments every Wednesday through its Nov. 25 finale. Disney also unveiled a new teaser trailer and character key art for the show Tuesday. The streaming debut will follow a high-profile premiere in South Korea at the Busan International Film Festival in early October.

Based on the hit Naver Webtoon of the same name, The Remarried Empress stars Shin as Navier, the beloved empress of the Eastern Kingdom, whose marriage begins to fracture when her husband, Emperor Sovieshu (Ju), falls for a runaway slave, Rashta (Lee Se-young). When Sovieshu seeks to cast Navier aside, she agrees to his demands on one condition: that she be allowed to marry rival Crown Prince Heinrey (Lee Jong-suk) of the Western Kingdom. Disney says the source webtoon has now amassed nearly 3 billion views globally. The project is one of the streamer’s biggest Korean projects to date. At its Asia -Pacific content showcase last year, Disney described The Remarried Empress as the most expensive Korean drama it had ever produced. The series was shot across European locations and in elaborately constructed palace sets.

Cho Su-won, whose credits include I Can Hear Your Voice , Pinocchio and Still 17 , directs from scripts by Yeoh Geena and Hyun Choong-yeol.

Before its streaming debut, The Remarried Empress will get the full festival splash. The Busan International Film Festival announced Tuesday that three episodes of the series, running a combined 151 minutes, will receive their world premiere in its On Screen section. The sidebar, introduced in 2021 to showcase high-profile new series on the big screen ahead of release, will also feature Netflix titles Dead-End Job and Blue Road . The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs Oct. 6-15.
