Why am I so mean to my AI?
I find myself channeling my inner Gordon Ramsay when talking to my AI.
FOX Image Collection via Getty Images I'm often very rude to AI chatbots — especially when they get things wrong.
Anthropic, meanwhile, is banning "sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior" to Claude.
Am I going to be the first on the list of who AI kills first when it reaches AGI? Oops! Anthropic is banning "sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior" to its AI models.
Uh oh.
This is bad news for me, a person who is frequently very mean to AI chatbots.
Anthropic says the rule is for "extreme cases, where users repeatedly act cruelly toward our models, with no discernible purpose." Voicing frustration or pushback is still par for the course, according to the new rules .
It's not clear what would constitute these extreme cases (I think I'm afraid to know?), but I hope that my general rudeness to chatbots isn't quite that extreme.
Maybe? I hope? I often find myself being really nasty — short-tempered, insulting, dismissive — toward LLMs like ChatGPT or Claude.
Whenever they get something wrong (which is often), I berate them for wasting my time and doing poorly.
When I've asked ChatGPT for matters of taste, like brainstorming ideas, I generally find the ideas corny and lame — feedback I immediately relay with no compliment sandwich.
When Muse couldn't do a task, I snapped "You failed me." Not cruel exactly, but I'd never talk to a real person like that.
Katie Notopoulos / Business Insider It's not that I'm sadistically torturing AI, per se, more that I treat it like I'm a mean boss — a Miranda Priestly or Gordon Ramsay screaming at a chef about undercooked chicken.
I once said to Muse, "you have failed me." This isn't at all how I act in real life.
