Trump-backed Rep. Harriet Hageman wins Republican Senate primary in Wyoming

Rep. Harriet Hageman has won the Republican primary for Wyoming’s open Senate seat, NBC News projects, advancing to the general election in the deep-red state.

Hageman had the support of President Donald Trump as she ran against four Republican opponents. Trump weighed in to offer his “complete and total endorsement” on Truth Social shortly after she announced her candidacy in December.

Hageman won her House seat with Trump’s support in 2022, when she ousted Rep. Liz Cheney, a Trump critic, in a Republican primary. Trump backed Hageman after Cheney voted to impeach him in 2021 and later joined the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and spoke out forcefully against the 2021 attack.

“I know Harriet well, and she is a TOTAL WINNER!” Trump wrote in his post endorsing her in this year’s election. “Harriet has ALWAYS delivered for Wyoming, and will continue to do so in the United States Senate.”

Hageman emerged from a primary field that included former Kirby Mayor Sam Mead, who partially self-funded his campaign. His uncle, Matt Mead, was governor from 2011 to 2019.

Cheney conceded her 2022 primary race at an event at the Mead family ranch, according to Wyoming Public Media , and Mead said he was “proud of her for standing up for the truth.”

The Wyoming Senate seat is open this year after Sen. Cynthia Lummis, a Republican, announced in December that she would not seek re-election. Lummis, 71, said at the time that she did “not have six more years in me.”

Wyoming is a deep-red state and has not had a Democratic senator since 1962 . Trump won more than 71% of the vote there in 2024. Hageman, too, was easily swept to re-election in 2024, securing 71% of the vote.

Hageman was a lawyer before she served in Congress. As Wyoming’s lone House member, she is on the Judiciary and Natural Resources committees.

Wyoming was the least populated state as of 2020, according to U.S. census data , with just under 577,000 residents.
