Mitch McConnell’s sudden reemergence after more than three months of silence has only deepened the questions about his vanishing act and his wife, Elaine Chao, whose whereabouts remain unclear.

Three months after he went missing, an extremely frail McConnell, 84, was wheeled out of his Washington, D.C., home Monday and transported to the Capitol, where he spoke briefly to reporters and was seen chatting with colleagues on the Senate floor.

But Chao, who has been married to McConnell for 33 years, was nowhere to be seen, just as she’s been missing at other crucial moments during the Kentucky senator’s 92-day disappearance, including when he was first hospitalized in June.

She did not release a statement about McConnell’s recovery, with her last X post praising her work as President George W.

Bush’s Labor secretary in the aftermath of the Sept.

11 attacks.

Chao did not respond to the Daily Beast’s questions about her husband’s health and her whereabouts.

On June 14, as emergency responders dispatched to McConnell’s home for a reported cardiac arrest rushed the senator to the hospital, Chao was in China—and she remained there for at least another three days after her husband was hospitalized.

Her spokesperson later told the Daily Beast that McConnell’s condition “did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.”— the only public statement Chao released about her husband throughout his disappearance.

Chao’s apparent attempt to downplay McConnell’s condition is all the more curious given a statement posted on his X account on Monday, in which he announced his return to the Senate and mentioned that he had suffered from a “bad fall” that led to a “long and often frustrating” recovery process.

The statement only muddied the picture of McConnell’s health, because his office had previously said in a July 12 statement that he had suffered a “mild case of pneumonia” during his recovery from the supposed fall.

McConnell’s sudden resurfacing also raises the question of why the senator and his staffers, who have collected roughly $893,872 in taxpayer-funded paychecks over the past 92 days , have refused to regularly inform his constituents about his condition and timeline for returning to the Senate if his return was in the works.

McConnell’s staff had offered no indication Monday that he would return to the Senate before he was wheeled out of his home.
