Man scales locked gate in chilling video after allegedly chasing college student home; then walks free: police

Chilling surveillance video shows a UC Berkeley student racing through a locked gate as a homeless man allegedly chased her home, only to watch him scale the barrier, enter her apartment complex and remain free while prosecutors decide whether to charge him.

The frightening Sept.

15 encounter was captured on security video outside a building in the 1900 block of Walnut Street in Berkeley, California .

The video shows the woman entering the secured complex around 8 p.m.

Seconds later, a man climbs over the locked gate and allegedly follows her inside while holding an object initially reported as a knife.

VIRAL VIDEO OF HOMELESS ENCAMPMENT AROUND CITY OF BERKELEY SPARKS SAFETY CONCERNS FROM PARENT Berkeley police later determined the object was likely a barbecue lighter and said there was no direct contact between the man and the woman.

The student, identified only as Eden for safety reasons, told ABC7 that she had been walking her dog on Berkeley Way when the man made strange gestures, approached her and then began running toward her.

She made it inside the complex and reached an elevator before he could see where she went, according to the outlet.

"I shut the gate behind me, heard him and saw him climbing the gate," Eden told ABC7.

Patrol officers were handling other high-priority emergencies at the time, including a domestic violence case and a report involving a missing person considered at risk.

Eden told ABC7 that officers arrived about an hour later but were unable to locate the man.

The next night, at approximately 9:24 p.m., police received another call reporting that the same man was lying on a sidewalk near Berkeley Way and Walnut Street.

Officers responded, detained and identified him, according to the department.
