You Can Thank Lin Shaye for ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’

As the psychic Elise Rainier, Lin Shaye has long served as the emotional heart of the Insidious franchise, guiding its various characters through emotional and spiritual turmoil. Apparently, it’s a role she played in real life, too, when the franchise’s future was in jeopardy.

According to Variety , at some point during the development of Insidious: Out of the Further , the series’ sixth and most recent installment , Sony canceled the film and pulled it from the release schedule. Shaye, however, had a pretty succinct response to that news: “Fuck this.”

Shaye refused to take the film’s cancelation lying down. She wrote a letter to Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group CEO Tom Rothman and asked him to reverse the decision—and it worked. The movie got made, and it premiered in theaters last weekend.

“It gives me chills because I don’t consider myself a mover and a shaker,” she said. “It’s not like I single-handedly got this movie made, but I spoke up. I think speaking up must never, ever stop. Don’t ever stop.”

Shaye said she was inspired to speak up for the fans who have stuck with the franchise over the past 15 years. But even though her act of defiance was selfless, it’s had some pretty profound benefits for her, too.

“I’m going to live until I’m 250, because I’m taking all this gorgeous energy that’s being delivered to me in such a graceful way,” Shaye said. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.”
