Hot take alert: ESPN getting rid of 'BottomLine' score ticker is a travesty, not a reason to celebrate

In case you missed the news, ESPN is getting rid of its "BottomLine" score ticker during college football broadcasts this coming season.

As Yahoo Sports reports, the network is trying to streamline the college football viewer experience for fans, and will remove the ticker from all broadcasts of the sport across its different channels.

ESPN has already gotten rid of the "BottomLine" during other live broadcasts such as the College Football Playoff and NBA postseason games.

As soon as I heard this news, I immediately went to social media to see what the reaction would be.

Surely, everyone felt the same way as I did, right? That is to say, this is a horrible move by ESPN and just another way the network is taking away what we love little by little in a sort of "frog in the boiling pot of water" way.

But, much to my surprise and chagrin, the move is being widely lauded by fans across all of social media.

The vast majority of people weighing in on the removal of the "BottomLine" are doing so in support of the decision.

Some fans say it's a needless distraction, while others say they can just check their phones for the scores and call anyone who flinches at this announcement a "grandpa" or a "boomer." THESE ONCE-ANNUAL COLLEGE RIVALRIES USED TO DEFINE COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND NEED TO MAKE A COMEBACK ASAP If I may be so bold, these people are missing the point so badly they couldn't find it with a telescope.

This is just another example of ESPN bastardizing something that we grew up with and loved deeply: college football.

Sure, anyone can open up their phone and see that Arkansas is covering the spread against LSU, but that takes all the fun out of it.

There's nothing more electric than watching a game and seeing the ticker light up with the words "UPSET ALERT" in big, bold letters at the bottom of the screen.

Besides, who wants to be on their phones all game long anyway? And anyone calling a ticker that takes up roughly 8% of their television screen is either being insanely disingenuous or has some serious attention span issues.

Are your brains so fried that a ticker distracts you from watching the greatest sport on earth every Saturday? This is coming from the same people that need to have the subtitles on during their stupid Netflix documentaries, though, so it's all starting to make sense.
