I'm a food writer who was born and raised in the UK. Here are 10 British dishes everyone should try in their lifetime.
I'm from the United Kingdom and have been writing about food for years — so, I know my way around the British classics and must-eat dishes around here.
Nina Alizada/Shutterstock I was born and raised in the UK, and there are a few local bites and British dishes I recommend .
Everyone should try a Cornish pasty, cottage pie, and Sunday roast at least once.
Beans on toast, fish and chips, and Yorkshire pudding are classics.
The UK's modern food culture is seriously diverse and exciting.
In our cities, you can have sushi for lunch, and dosa for dinner, with pakora or a bahn mi as a snack in between.
But we Brits still love our potatoes, overdone meat, and root vegetables — all of which come plastered with brown gravy so thick you could have it on toast.
Which, unsurprisingly, some people do .
If you'd like to transport yourself to a damp, English Sunday afternoon, try one of these delicious dishes, as curated by a begrudgingly nostalgic Brit who's been writing about food for years.
I grew up in Cornwall, where eating pasties weekly, if not daily, is the norm for locals.
David Pimborough/Shutterstock A Cornish pasty is a large, half-moon pastry enclosing chunks of beef skirt, finely chopped potato, and turnip with lashings of black pepper and a slab or two of butter.
The pastry, which is somewhere between shortcrust, flaky, and hot-water crust, should have the rigidity to withstand being transported, as traditionally it was taken down the tin mines as a "crib" (Cornish for a mid-morning snack).
The pasty's edge is crimped on the side, never the top, and was traditionally thrown away because the miner's hands would have been covered in arsenic and other metals, which are a tad deadly if ingested.
If you're in the UK, I'm afraid you'll have to go to Cornwall to eat a decent pasty.
