Runner discovers woman stabbed to death outside vehicle near upscale DC suburb trail

A morning runner discovered a woman fatally stabbed outside her vehicle near a popular trail area in an affluent Northern Virginia neighborhood outside Washington, D.C., Monday, according to police.

Fairfax County police said officers were called around 7 a.m. to the 8800 block of Georgetown Pike in the Great Falls area of McLean, Virginia, after a community member heading out for a morning run spotted an unconscious woman in the parking lot near a 2011 Honda Civic.

Police identified the woman Tuesday as Carmen Lizet Puch, 42, of Reston, Virginia.

Puch was suffering from trauma to her upper body and was pronounced dead at that location, Fairfax County Police Capt.

Jason Chandler said during a news conference.

The department separately described the incident as a "fatal stabbing." The vehicle near Puch was registered to her, police said.

Police identified the exact location as the parking lot of Difficult Run Park.

McLean, located just outside Washington, D.C., is one of Northern Virginia's most affluent communities, sitting just outside Washington.

The median household income tops $250,000, while the median owner-occupied home is valued at more than $1.4 million, according to the latest U.S.

Census Bureau data .

Detectives were actively following up on leads Monday, but authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or released a description.

In an update Tuesday , police said homicide and crime scene detectives were processing evidence and working to identify a suspect.
