Not-So New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Footage Has Leaked

As is tradition when it comes time for the D23 Expo, footage leaks have been making the rounds online. This year, they include a four-minute trailer for the third film in Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man trilogy, Beyond the Spider-Verse , and a Doctor Doom-centric trailer for Avengers: Doomsday .

Let’s start with Spida-Man. To call the leaked footage—which is actively being copyright-stricken and repopulated online on places like X/Twitter—a trailer is a bit of a misnomer. For all intents and purposes, the clip looks more like the opening moments of Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming film than your usual supercut trailer stitched together from big action moments. Furthermore, the trailer has been showcased before, albeit only at Cinema Con for those lucky enough to be in attendance ( including io9 ). That being said, for folks who are curious about what exactly happens in the trailer and those who’d rather stay spoiler-free, now’s the time to click away or brace yourself for the next paragraph detailing just that.

The Beyond the Spider-Verse leaked clip picks up where Across the Spider-Verse left Miles Morales in its cliffhanger ending: tied up to a punching bag, surrounded by his alternate-universe uncle Aaron and his alternate-universe self, who, instead of becoming Spider-Man, becomes the Prowler. Despite the palpable tension of the previous film, both Miles have a funny moment where alt-Miles gives our Miles shit for not rolling the r in his last name properly before our Spider-Man tries to explain why he’s here.

After telling alt-Spider-Man that he’s only got two days to prevent his dad from dying and that the cosmicness of canon events is at play, Prowler doesn’t believe Miles but is put off by his body glitching out enough to know something is off. Before things get too out of hand for Miles, he slips out of his binds—referencing Peter B. Parker telling him to pay attention to the hands in Into the Spider-Verse —and fights the duo 2 vs. 1.

After which, we see glimpses of Hobie Brown’s universe , Miles talking to Gwen Stacy, Miles fighting Miguel O’Hara, Spot growing more powerful, and the movie’s release date of June 18, 2027 (which we already knew). As some fans who peeked at the trailer point out, its look suggests it was a rough draft of what folks can expect from the film. The evidence folks highlight to back up this claim is that Prowler’s facial details look smoother than the comic-book-esque linework in Into the Spider-Verse , leading many to posit that the trailer was somewhat unrendered.

Regardless, the internet is treating the Spider-Verse morsel like the second coming, which is hard not to blame them for, given the film’s numerous delays and the general malaise over how long it would take between its second entry and the third to give the animated movie all the TLC it deserves .
