Somehow the Sphere’s ‘Wizard of Oz’ Just Got Even More Dystopian

The Sphere in Las Vegas has already raked in buckets of cash with its AI-enhanced Wizard of Oz spectacular . But now that the show’s been running for a year , it’s time to add some new bells and whistles in the form of additional 4D special effects. If you had an irrational fear of the Wicked Witch of the West’s flying monkey posse while watching Oz as a kid, consider this fair warning.

As the Sphere ‘s website reports, beginning September 25, the presentation will include “spectacular new visuals, breathtaking sound, and expanded 4D effects that surround you from every direction … Every new moment builds on what audiences love and immerses you in the story.”

The Hollywood Reporter has more details about the additions: “new animatronic winged monkeys that will fly over the audience; additional pyrotechnic fireworks; ‘Glinda Glitter’; new scented apples that will fall from the sky; and new scents that will be released into the venue during key scenes.”

Fireworks, glitter, and scents—fine. Animatronic winged monkeys flapping around? Nightmare material! You can visit the Sphere’s website to find tickets through May 2027.

As THR reminds us, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is also getting the Sphere treatment in 2027. Considering the cult movie is already traditionally screened as an interactive experience, chances for an all-out sensory overload are extremely high.
