Terrorism, armed conflict prompt stark warning for Americans visiting scenic spot

Officials are urging Americans to steer clear of a Middle Eastern destination known for its dramatic desert landscapes, rugged mountains and picturesque coastline.

The advisory was updated to reflect that family members may now travel to Oman to join U.S. government employees stationed there — while the advisory level and risk indicators remain unchanged.

The advisory also points to an ongoing threat of drone and missile attacks from Iran following the onset of hostilities between the United States and Iran on Feb.

"Terrorism is a concern in Oman," the advisory states.

"Attacks can occur with little or no warning, especially around holidays," it adds.

"They can involve knives, firearms and vehicles." ROBBERIES, ASSAULTS AND RAPES SPUR NEW US TRAVEL WARNING FOR POPULAR CARIBBEAN GETAWAY The State Department said terrorists can target tourist locations , transportation hubs and places "visited by U.S. citizens and other foreigners." Tourists are also urged to keep their guard up around markets, shopping malls, entertainment venues and government facilities.

"Terrorists may use violence to respond to direct attacks against them or other military operations in the region," the advisory said.

Additionally, Americans are told not to travel to the Yemen border area due to terrorism and armed conflict.

The country received nearly four million visitors in 2025, according to Oman's National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
