Spider-Man Defeats the Avengers, Only ‘Star Wars’ Is Left to Beat

Spider-Man has defeated the Avengers again . At the box office, that is. After Spider-Man: Brand New Day squeaked by Avengers: Endgame for the highest-grossing opening weekend in history, the Webslinger has continued his dominance and has now surpassed that film’s all-time domestic gross. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now the second-highest-grossing film in U.S. history, with only Star Wars: The Force Awakens left to beat for the top spot.

Brand New Day grossed about $3.4 million this past Monday, which brought its grand total up to $858.4 million. And that was the number it needed because in 2019, Avengers: Endgame ended its run with $858.3 million. Spider-Man now stands about $78 million behind 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is the highest-grossing domestic film of all time at $936.7 million.

Now, there are a few things to consider here. The most important one is that Brand New Days is only in its fourth week at the box office. Avengers: Endgame took four and a half MONTHS to reach its total. By that metric, Spider-Man should not only become the second film to ever cross $900 million domestically, it should also defeat Star Wars with ease.

On the flip side, though, next month Avengers: Endgame is coming back to theaters with Avengers: Endgame: Encore . Re-release grosses usually count towards the main, overall total, so depending on how that does, Endgame could take the second spot back or maybe even challenge Star Wars/Spider-Man for the top spot. If Brand New Day taught us anything, it’s to never underestimate the power of Marvel.

All of which is to say it’s going to be a fun few weeks for fans of box office records, as have the last few months. Think about it. This summer we saw the biggest opening weekend in history, the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, the highest-grossing original film of the decade, and now we’ve seen the second-highest-grossing film in U.S. history. The records will continue to fall.
