The internet pays tribute to feminist Gloria Steinem

Feminist activist and journalist Gloria Steinem died on Wednesday, according to a post shared on her Instagram account .

She was 92.

The news, shared early Thursday, included a recent photo of Steinem and a statement about her life.

"Yesterday, Gloria Steinem passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her.

Gloria's near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end," it began.

No cause of death was given.

View this post on Instagram Steinem was a key figure in the feminist movement in the United States, beginning in the 1960s with second-wave feminism.

She spoke about gender equality and issues like abortion.

She first gained national attention in 1963 when she went undercover as a Playboy bunny and wrote about the experience.

Steinem went on to co-found Ms. magazine and remained a prominent voice on gender parity and reproductive rights.

Former President Obama awarded Steinhem with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

"Gloria's greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard.

Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves.

Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor," the statement read.
