Man charged with operating boat under the influence in crash that killed 2 kids

A New Jersey man surrendered to authorities Friday on charges that he was operating a boat under the influence in July when two children, ages 7 and 9 years, were thrown into the water and died, police said.

Stephen Schneider, 63, of Bayville, was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree reckless vessel homicide, along with one count each of operating a vessel under the influence and reckless operation of a vessel, New Jersey State Police said.

On July 19, at around 9:09 p.m., a 30-foot Tidewater Custom 280 vessel struck a channel marker in the Intercoastal Waterway, throwing a 9-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy into the water, according to state police and an NBC Philadelphia report .

Online court records did not show the case as of Saturday, and it was not clear whether Schneider had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
