‘Power Rangers’ Concept Art Reveals the Show That Almost Was

Disney passing on a Power Rangers reboot in August means the teen superheroes won’t be on the screen for a while, but some recently revealed concept art might tide fans over and get them wondering what that next era would’ve been like.

This art comes courtesy of artist Samuel Rafa Garcia , an illustrator who previously worked with Netflix and Gearbox. After getting approval from his higher-ups, he shared art for a scrapped show that includes primary Ranger designs and their morph effect . Looking at a GIF of the process, it looks like it’d have literalized the series’ lightning bolt logo and used electricity to transform the team from top to bottom, similar to Thor .

Visually, the suits’ white diamond and it being a secondary color clearly shows a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers influence, as do the helmets. (One of them even looks like the Mighty Red’s Tyrannosaurus helmet, just without the silver teeth.) The 2017 movie also seems to be an inspiration, as there’s a similar pattern design and emphasis on the primary color in some of the art.

One interesting thing to note is, according to Garcia’s artwork, the Power Rangers show was looking at a three-person team of Red, Green, and Blue. It’s a notable shift from how previous shows did it; whenever the starting team was three Rangers, it’d be Yellow joining Red and Blue. In those seasons, Green is either a later addition to the team (like in Ninja Storm or RPM ) , or just not featured at all.

Now, the question is: whose show was this? Garcia’s ArtStation names Netflix as a client, which suggests this would’ve been the streamer’s Power Rangers before it died in 2024 . He didn’t name names, just said he had a “great time” working with studio 9B Collective on the project. The company’s credits include a few Netflix features like Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie and Jupiter’s Legacy— so we reached out to 9B for comment, and will update if we get a response.
