‘Backrooms’ Maps a Path to HBO Max in September

If somehow you’ve yet to explore Backrooms ‘ yellow-hued rooms of doom—or, if like Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character, Clark, you just can’t resist slipping back inside for another look around—your streaming chance is arriving September 25. That’s when A24’s highest-grossing film of all time arrives on HBO Max, completing a cycle that began in a series of creepypasta-inspired YouTube videos and then racked up big bucks on the big screen .

Backrooms ‘ success comes thanks to a convergence of factors, including that built-in fanbase who were already picking up what director Kane Parsons was putting down with his viral video series. The feature gives a much bigger canvas to the idea that beneath a desperately drab furniture store, a dimension of ever-changing and disturbingly populated rooms feeds on the minds and memories of those who encounter it. Casting Oscar nominees Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve added further heft, and Backrooms ‘ arrival nearly in tandem with another word-of-mouth horror sensation, Obsession , helped the film sail to its box office triumph.

The Backrooms cast also features Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. If there’s a sequel , we hope to learn more about Duplass’ character—or at least the mysterious research institute he works for, whose presence suggests there’s a lot more Backrooms story to tell.
