Remaining suspect in Tucson police cadet killing captured after five-day manhunt

Suspected Tucson cop killer Alex James Barnett, 33, has been arrested after authorities say they found him hiding out in an apartment complex nearly a week after the home invasion shooting of Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez, 23.

Ramirez's fiancee, a Pima County corrections officer, was hospitalized in stable condition after the attack.

Authorities were tipped off to Barnett's hideout near East Broadway Boulevard and South Camino Seco around 6 p.m.

Monday, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

County SWAT officers arrested him after a three-hour standoff, and no one else was hurt.

Both suspects are being held without bail at the Pima County jail.

In December 2024, he pleaded guilty to an unlawful imprisonment charge.

However, a man of the same name and age has drug and shoplifting convictions in Yavapai County, possession of contraband behind bars in Navajo and Graham Counties, and a number of lesser charges in Prescott.
