Xavi Hernandez Officially Named Netherlands Head Coach

Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez was officially announced as the new head coach of the Netherlands national team on Wednesday.

Xavi replaces Ronald Koeman, who departed following the team's elimination in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.

He becomes the first non-Dutch manager to lead the men's Oranje team since 1978.

The 46-year-old Spaniard has been out of management since leaving Barcelona in May 2024.

He recently interviewed with KNVB officials as the federation searches for a successor to Ronald Koeman.

"My next step could be a national team.

It would suit me, and I want that.

I have family.

A club wouldn't allow me as much time with my family, I've got young children," Xavi said in July when discussing his career ambitions.

The Dutch managerial opening follows a disappointing campaign at the 2026 World Cup.

The Netherlands were eliminated in the round of 32 by Morocco, drawing 1-1 before losing 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

Xavi brings significant experience to the candidacy.

He began his coaching career with Qatari club Al Sadd in 2019 before taking over at Barcelona in November 2021, where he won a La Liga title and a Spanish Super Cup during his three-season tenure.

As a player, he earned 133 caps for Spain, winning the 2010 World Cup alongside European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012.
