Witnesses in Sibiya case say they feel unsafe

The two witnesses in the case against former Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya say they are suicidal, feel unsafe and live in constant fear.

The statements of the 18-year-old whom Sibiya is accused of raping and the 16-year-old whom the State alleged he was sexually grooming were read out in the Randburg Magistrates ‘ Court.

SIBIYA BAIL | The defence argues that Shadrack Sibiya is not a flight risk and has no intention of contacting or interfering with any witnesses involved in the case. https://t.co/tb1LTFD34u — SABC News (@SABCNews) October 14, 2026 Sibiya is applying for bail.

He faces multiple charges, including the alleged sexual grooming, rape, human trafficking and the contravention of the Firearms Control Act.

Defence Attorney Rishaad Moosa denied efforts to contact the witnesses.

SIBIYA BAIL | The court is hearing a victim impact statement from the 18-year-old, who says she fears for her safety should Shadrack Sibiya be released on bail. https://t.co/2DXYi9LTjN — SABC News (@SABCNews) October 14, 2026 “I think it is absolutely imperative that I state before this Honourable Court that, firstly, we are not aware of the identities of the witnesses or any of their friends.

When I say “we,” I refer to the defence team.

I must deny, in the strongest possible terms, that I made any effort, or that I advised any other member of my team to make any effort, to contact anyone on the State’s side with a view to obtaining an affidavit that contradicts MC’s version.

In fact, I consider such allegations to be highly defamatory,” says Moosa.
