Dr Smama and Nhlanhla Mafu revive the art of the Zulu love song

SAMA nominated Afrosoul artist and medical doctor Dr Smama is releasing Isifiso Sami, his first collaboration with Mafikizolo's Nhlanhla Mafu.

South African music is looking back to traditional storytelling for inspiration as Afro soul vocalist and medical doctor Dr Smama teams up with Mafikizolo vocalist Nhlanhla Mafu on a new love song.

The SAMA-nominated artist, whose real name is Sindile Simama, and Mafu will release Isifiso Sami ('My Wish') on Friday, September 4.

The track combines contemporary Afro soul with the nostalgic sound of traditional Maskandi guitar, offering a different take on the modern love song.

For Dr Smama, the release represents a departure from his usual approach. The songwriter, who has written songs for artists including Berita, Nokwazi and the late Lundi Tyamara, recorded a song written by an outside composer for the first time in his career.

He said the Maskandi influence immediately attracted him and pushed him beyond his usual gospel soul sound.

Dr Smama said the song goes beyond romance, presenting love as an intentional and vulnerable choice to stand by someone despite outside pressures.

The collaboration also marks the first studio recording between the two artists, who have been friends for more than 20 years.

Mafu said the pair had deliberately waited for a song that felt distinctive and authentic rather than rushing into a collaboration.

She said Isifiso Sami captures a depth of lyricism and traditional storytelling that she believes has been lost amid fast-moving digital trends.

By blending Maskandi guitar with Afro soul, the song seeks to connect traditional African storytelling with contemporary music and bridge different generations of listeners.

Isifiso Sami will be available on major digital streaming platforms from Friday, September 4, 2026.
