Free State man arrested for sexual assault

Police in Dewetsdorp in the Free State have arrested a 46-year-old man for alleged sexual assault as well as an attack on a police officer on Friday night.

Provincial Police Spokesperson Thabo Covane says the suspect allegedly harassed an 18-year-old bartender before sexually assaulting her after the other patrons had left at a local establishment.

Covane says the victim managed to escape and contacted her parents, who called the police.

The suspect became aggressive when police officers arrived and allegedly attacked a SAPS reservist constable.

He is expected to appear in the Dewetsdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.
