CPUT SRC calls for probe into university’s finances

The Central Student Representative Council (SRC) of Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has called for an investigation into the financial management of the institution.

The SRC leadership held a media briefing in Cape Town.

This comes amid the suspension of academic programmes following weeks of student protests, which also resulted in the university instructing students to leave residences.

CPUT Protests | All campus activities suspended: Among the many issues raised by the SRC are the safety of student residences, withholding of academic documents and the now withdrawn Financial Recovery Plan for 2027, which would have seen students in residences paying an upfront amount of R7 000 upon registration next year.

SRC President Liyabulela Gela says, “Whoever has caused that can then be held accountable because as you have seen from the statement, this is not an issue that started now…can there be at least an investigation or perhaps can we look into the finances of the university because clearly, this is the true representation, that public funds are not used as they are supposed to be used.

So, can we please look at the financial state of CPUT.” Meanwhile, the university has since the damage to its various campuses amid student protests exceeds a million rand.

It says it hasn’t taken the decision to close campuses and residences lightly. -Report by Yonda Magubudela
