Cape Town Metro Police thwart hijackers in two incidents
While off duty on Sunday afternoon, a Metro Police officer spotted an active hijacking at the Govan Mbeki and Sheffield Roads intersection. He activated his vehicle's blue lights to deter the perpetrators and promptly requested backup.
As backup arrived, the suspects abandoned the stolen vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby informal settlement, escaping between the shacks after one individual brandished a handgun at the pursuing officers.
Following the initial escape, the suspects quickly returned to Sheffield Road to attempt another vehicle hijacking. However, swift action by officers resulted in the arrest of a 23-year-old suspect.
The suspect was transferred to Philippi East SAPS for further investigation and processing. He faces multiple charges, such as attempted murder, pointing a firearm, hijacking, resisting arrest, and possession of a stolen cellphone.
Authorities also recovered two vehicles, a silver/grey Renault Triber and a black Mitsubishi Xpander, which were taken to the Bellville South Vehicle Impound.
Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, commended the response, stating: “These hijackers were either incredibly brazen or desperate to try and carry out their criminal act for a second time.”
"It’s imperative that the investigation includes checking whether they might have been trying to flee another crime scene at the time,” he added.
He commended the officers for their exemplary work, praising both their swift initial response and their diligent follow-up that led to the suspect's arrest, expressing hope that it will assist investigators in locating the remaining accomplices.
