EXCLUSIVE: Hashim Amla praises Lions' pipeline as domestic cricket format debates continue

As the debate around South Africa's domestic cricket formats continues to heat up, DP World Lions batting coach Hashim Amla has praised the existing structures that have driven his side's considerable success in recent seasons.

When asked in an exclusive interview with IOL if the Lions were carrying much of the weight of South Africa's high-performance pipeline, Amla remained grounded.

“I have no idea what the financial standings are with anyone. All I know is that the DP World Lions have been a really good franchise. Fortunately, quite a few of our players have gone on to represent South Africa, SA 'A', and the SA Emerging team.”

The reigning 4-Day Series Division 1 champions continue to churn out top-tier talent. Over the past few seasons, rising stars Kwena Maphaka , Nqaba Peter , and Connor Esterhuizen have all earned national call-ups.

“That’s been one of the most rewarding parts for the coaching staff—seeing so many of our players step up,” Amla said. “It’s a double-edged sword because you constantly lose key players to the national sides, which leads to frequent personnel changes. But at the same time, you’re producing quality cricketers who are adding real value to the country.”

Amla, who represented South Africa in 349 international matches across all three formats, remains incredibly optimistic about the nation's cricketing future.

“There is vast talent in South Africa. We are certainly not short of talented players coming through the system, and every province can boast about the talent they're developing,” he added. “At the Lions, every year we see youngsters step up who make you think, 'Wow, this guy could be the next Protea.' As a coach, watching that talent come through is hugely exciting.”
