Police arrest key figure in R26 million mineral theft syndicate
A police task team has arrested a co-ordinator in the theft and illicit trade of minerals in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.
A twelfth suspect wanted in connection with the theft of minerals valued at R26 million in KwaZulu-Natal is behind bars.
Sakhile Cyril Mbuyazi, 44, was arrested on Tuesday after the SAPS National Organised Task Team secured a warrant for his arrest. Police alleged that Mbuyazi acted as a co-ordinator in the theft and illicit trade of minerals in and around Richards Bay.
Mbuyazi appeared before the Empangeni Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, facing a charge of theft of minerals. His case was postponed to August 28 for a formal bail application.
The police believe Mbuyazi could be a key figure in the criminal syndicate under investigation. Mbuyazi allegedly paid individuals involved in the theft of the minerals, and h is arrest brings the total number of suspects arrested and charged in connection with this investigation to 12.
Police said the latest development follows the sentencing of Sphamandla Mdletshe, 37, in the Richards Bay Regional Court on August 5. He was sentenced to 10 years' direct imprisonment after being convicted of the theft of minerals valued at R26 million. His conviction followed a plea and sentence agreement entered into with the state.
The Richards Bay Investigation Team, which is investigating the syndicate, has charged those arrested with various offences, including theft of minerals, money laundering and racketeering. The remaining accused are expected to appear before the Richards Bay Regional Court on August 27 for a pre-trial conference.
The Acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane, commended the team for securing the warrant and apprehending Mbuyazi.
“We remain committed to dismantling criminal syndicates involved in organised crime and ensuring that those who participate in the illegal exploitation and trade of our mineral resources are identified, arrested and brought before the courts. We will continue to intensify our efforts to disrupt organised criminal networks and recover assets linked to criminal activities,” Dimpane said.
