Mamelodi Sundowns' Siyanda Ndlovu urged to remain grounded against familiar Golden Arrows

Siyanda Ndlovu has quickly become a fan favourite at Mamelodi Sundowns , seamlessly fitting in with Masandawana. However, coach Miguel Cardoso wants him to continue improving all-round while avoiding the hype.

Ndlovu has made two cameo appearances since arriving at Sundowns from Golden Arrows. He has hardly looked out of place in the team’s structure, continuing to dazzle on the ball to loud cheers from the stands.

His high morale has already tipped him as an invaluable asset for the Brazilians as they aim to continue to dominate the continent this season, while challenging for every domestic trophy, including the MTN8.

The Brazilians have put themselves in good stead to win the Wafa Wafa cup – which would be only their second in 18 years – after reaching the semi-finals. They face Golden Arrows over two legs in an exciting MTN8 clash, beginning with the first leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon (3pm kickoff).

Whether starting or coming off the bench, Ndlovu is expected to play a key role in helping his team secure an advantage ahead of the second leg in Durban next weekend, especially given his intimate knowledge of Arrows.

Referencing Siyabonga Mabena – who was also a fan favourite last season before losing consistency and falling down the pecking order – Cardoso stressed that Ndlovu must prove he deserves more game time.

“Our job as coaches is to create conditions for the players to be consistent,” Cardoso said. “Siyanda has played a lot of PSL matches.

“I remember last season, there was a lot of excitement around Mabena. We included him in many matches at the beginning of the season, but his lack of consistency resulted in him moving to the reserve team. We will promote him again in the future.

“So, a player’s level of readiness determines how many opportunities he receives. Acquiring Siyanda was an important addition for the group, and we have high expectations.”

While quiet on whether Ndlovu is ready to start or play longer minutes, Cardoso reiterated the reasons for his current fitness levels.

“I was clear about him during pre-season. He got injured after a week and a few training sessions, training only briefly before his first game against Chiefs,” Cardoso explained.

“His match readiness is still developing, and his understanding of the team remains a work in progress. Offensively, he brings the magic everyone sees, but defensively, he still has a lot to work on.

“We are excited to have him and want to capitalise on his energy. However, developing a player long-term for both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana takes time. He is willing to put in the work because he is very happy to be with us.”

Cardoso urged the attacker to stay grounded, making another reference to Mabena, while emphasising that Ndlovu must earn a starting spot through continued hard work.
