Sundowns eye CAF Champions League group stage spot

Mamelodi Sundowns will be aiming to secure their place in the CAF Champions League group stages when they face Angolan side Wiliete in the second leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria this Friday.

The two teams played to a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola on Sunday, meaning the tie remains wide open heading into this return leg.

The Brazilians’ head Coach Miguel Cardoso says they will be looking to improve the team as they failed to capitalise on their chances in the first leg.

“Obviously, we’re going to prepare this match in the best possible way, we need to be stronger than we were.

We need to be more aggressive, we need to be more offensive, we need to be in the level of a team that wants to state itself on the Champion’s league.

Despite all of that intention, I think that we are not happy obviously, with this result, we should have and we could have scored and there were moments that in the first half that seems that the game will become quiet.

I would not say not easy to deal with, but we would create our moments, but during the second half it was not easy to settle down.” Meanwhile, the Brazilians will also be concerned about the physical condition of midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who was taken off the pitch on a stretcher after sustaining an injury in the first half.

Cardoso is hopeful that the injury is not that serious and he will play in the next match.

“Teboho, it’s a little bit of a touch on that ligament that was hurt in the national team.

At the moment, we don’t know the extent of the injury, but he could not continue in the match, so let’s hope it’s not a big thing; we will recover him for the next match.” Our first #TotalEnergiesCAFCL preliminary fixture ends in a draw.
